Animal Welfare Sunday

ASWA introduced and promotes a Sunday devoted to Animal Welfare which has been widely adopted. Animal Welfare Sunday is always the nearest Sunday to The Feast of St Francis (4th October).
ASWA produces resources for those involved in planning and leading Animal Welfare Sunday services.

Our Pack for Animal Welfare Sunday

We have produced a guide pack which includes the Service Guide and General Information Booklet as well as summary documents on a range of animal welfare related topics.

The factsheets in the pack (listed below) are available individually for download or as a Factsheet Pack by clicking on the download text to the right of each item as follows:

The inclusion of animals at Christian Festival services

We are often asked about the inclusion of live animals at Christian Festival services such as Christmas and Easter. Donkeys in particular are in great demand for Palm Sunday and Christmas Eve.

As long as the animals are comfortable with crowds and noise, we are in favour of including live animals in such services as it shows that they were part of the story.

The donkey in particular is a powerful Christian symbol with the cross marking that so many carry on their backs.

We would suggest that churches contact their local donkey sanctuary/farm animal rescue centre and see if a suitable donkey might be available. A fee is normally charged towards the work of the rescue centre.
