Putting Animals on the Agenda of the Christian Church

First and foremost ASWA people care about animals and their welfare. There are so many animals exploited for human advantage and often subject to appalling cruelty. We are a Christian organisation born of the Anglican Church but welcoming all denominations who share our compassion for animals.

This site is a focal point for ASWA where we will keep you up to date with current campaigns, useful references, resources, news and events. We believe animals are sentient beings created and valued by God. They deserve our compassion. We view our work as being in line with the fifth mark of mission of the Anglican Church which states ‘To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and to sustain the life of the earth’. We encourage you to get involved in any way you can. Thank you.

Animal Welfare Sunday

ASWA introduced and promotes a Sunday devoted to Animal Welfare which has been widely adopted. Animal Welfare Sunday is always the nearest Sunday to The Feast of St Francis (4th October).

ASWA produces supporting resources to help those involved in services.

Animal Friendly Church

We encourage churches which see Creation Care as part of their mission and discipleship to become part of our ‘Animal Friendly Church’ network.

Take a look at our application form. You may well be ‘Animal Friendly’ already! For example, do you encourage wildlife in your churchyard? Do you allow congregation members to bring their companion animal to services? Do you celebrate Animal Welfare Sunday each October?

Each year, we hold a competition and choose our favourite Animal Friendly Church. The winner receives a hamper of environmentally friendly goodies and a brass plaque to hang on your wall.

Remembering the Animals of War

Each year, on Remembrance Sunday we hold an open air service at the Animals’ War Memorial in London and remember the animals who suffered and died in the two world wars. We also remember animals who continue to serve alongside humans in ongoing conflicts and in aid our emergency services such as the police force and rescue operations. The service includes prayer and hymns and we usually have a guest speaker.
