About ASWA

Rt Revd Richard LlewellinMessage from Our Chairman

ASWA was founded in 1972 to help Anglicans and others to become more aware of the importance of animal welfare issues.

As Christians, we believe that God created and redeemed the whole of creation and that animals are sentient beings for whom we have a responsibility.

People are often unaware of how animals are frequently exploited and cruelly treated all over the world.

We welcome friends who share our aims and concern for animal welfare. We invite you to join our growing membership and help support the work of ASWA.

Rt Revd Richard Llewellin
former Bishop at Lambeth

ASWA is an Anglican (Church of England) organisation founded over 30 years ago. We are called to make Christians and others aware of the need to care for the whole of creation. In particular, we are concerned with the abuse of animals.

Intensive farming, the food chain, experimentation, diseases associated with animals, the ill treatment of domestic pets and the killing of animals for pleasure all raise ethical questions. Animal issues are theological issues and should be on the church’s agenda.

God has given us ‘dominion’ not ‘domination’ over animals (Genesis 1:26). This means ‘loving care’ not ‘ruthless exploitation’.
